PMC's multi-port EPON OLT SoCs are the industry's first solutions that address the need to increase
network functionality, improve reliability and reduce power consumption. The
PAS5400 devices integrate four 1Gb/s EPON MACs
and are scalable to enable high-density OLT equipment. The new EPON OLT family complies with
IEEE 802.3ah and China carrier specifications for EPON networks and includes:
PAS5404 with ‘lite’ traffic management
PAS5414 with fully featured traffic management
PAS5424 with fully featured traffic management and a cascading option that eliminates the need for an aggregation switch on the OLT line card
PMC's New EPON OLT Solutions Integrate the Most Advanced PON Capabilities Available:
In-band Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), enabling carriers to test the outdoor fiber optics line while in-service
Network power save controller
Mobile backhaul support
Integrated traffic management and packet processing
Line card traffic aggregation and direct connectivity to the backplane
All devices integrate four 1Gb/s upstream and downstream PON channels, including the EPON MAC, SERDES and fast-locking Burst Mode CDR, and support SGMII, XAUI and RXAUI backplane interfaces. On-chip fiber Automatic Protection Switching (APS) enables a rapid switch-over in cases of failures in the optical network.
Industry's First Symmetric and Asymmetric 10G EPON OLT SoC
PMC also announced 10G-EPON OLT devices
with industry-leading traffic management, packet processing, on-chip redundancy and the industry’s most
advanced optical diagnostic technologies. The 10G-EPON OLT family complies with IEEE 802.3av specifications and
China carrier specifications for both asymmetric and symmetric 10G-EPON modes. The devices provide the highest
network reliability and QoS, and are the first to integrate a complete, always-on toolkit
for optical network and ONU inspection. The toolkit consists of an in-band Optical Time Domain Reflectometer
(OTDR) and Upstream Signal Analyzer, that operate while in-service, reducing the need for external test
equipment. On-chip fiber Automatic Protection Switching (APS) enables a rapid switch-over in cases of failure
in the optical network.
PMC's enhanced QoS exceeds China Telecom specifications, including IPv6 protocol support.
Integrated traffic management and packet processing eliminates the need for high-power, low-density
external traffic management processors and enables the largest number of subscriber connections with
best-in-class QoS. A sophisticated queuing system lowers the cost of deployment and reduces power by enabling a
loss-less power save implementation at the EPON and 10G-EPON ONUs.
“We expect 10G EPON shipments to pick up significantly in 2011 among major operators in the Asia Pacific region. Whether it’s increasing bandwidth per subscriber or increasing the number of subscriber splits, operators will gradually transition to 10G for all their major FTTx deployments.”
Jeff Heynen, directing analyst, Broadband Access at Infonetics Research
PAS6502 SoC for data and voice-over-IP (VoIP) Single-Family Units (SFUs)
PAS6500 SoC for data SFUs
PAS6501 SoC for Multiple Dwelling Units (MDUs)
“EPON deployments continue to grow in China and Japan, and are now expanding to the U.S. markets. OEMs need to be able to reduce power consumption and equipment costs while increasing functionality in order to meet the service provider requirements for new deployments.”
Jag Bolaria, senior analyst, The Linley Group
PMC's new PAS6500 EPON ONU SoCs are the first to integrate EPON Optical Analog Front End technology consisting of a burst mode laser driver, a limiting amplifier and a receiver control processor. By connecting to an on-board Bi-directional Optical Sub Assembly (BoSA) instead of an optical transceiver, the PAS6500 solutions reduce ONU cost, size and power, while improving diagnostic capabilities. PAS6500, PAS6501 and PAS6502 all feature PMC's field-proven GigaPASS™ architecture. GigaPASS architecture deployed in more than 15 million PON devices worldwide achieves sustained gigabit and greater data rates.
PMC’s PAS6500 family integrates a programmable networking engine that enhances QoS and complies with China Telecom specification version 2.1, including IPv6 protocol support. Innovative power saving algorithms implemented within PAS6500 devices reduce ONU power consumption by up to 80 percent. This product family adds mobile backhaul over EPON support with the integration of Synchronous Ethernet and Time of Day delivery, wire-speed throughput at all packet sizes, queueing, filtering and advanced QoS.
PMC is the only supplier to offer or develop end-to-end silicon and
software solutions for EPON (IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile), 10G EPON (IEEE802.3av),
GPON (ITU-T G.984) and XG-PON (ITU-T G.987) standards. PMC’s widely deployed SoCs
provide end-to-end solutions linking central office equipment (optical line terminals)
and customer premises equipment (optical network units or optical network terminals)
to the PON network. The Company’s PON products are based on the robust
GigaPASS™ Architecture
that achieves sustained gigabit and greater data rates while executing the real-time operating system,
middleware, and application-specific firmware required for high-performance FTTH network access.
