PMC-Sierra's HyPHY Enables FiberHome to Deliver Breakthrough Multi-Service Convergence over OTN
PMC-Sierra announced that FiberHome, one of China's leading fiber-optic communications equipment providers, selected PMC-Sierra's HyPHY chipset for its FONST Series family of WDM optical transmission solutions. The modular architecture of the FONST solutions combined with the industry leading multi-service capabilities enabled by the HyPHY family offers the capabilities required to meet the diverse OTN network deployment requirements worldwide. FiberHome's muxponders and transponders enable carriers to deploy power optimized, scalable, OTN networks that address the increasing bandwidth requirements driven by 3G and 4G mobile, Carrier Ethernet, IPTV and cloud services.
“FiberHome’s FONST WDM solutions address the Carriers’ requirements for multi-service agility and high-capacity adaptability with increased power efficiency,” said Fan Zhiwen, vice-general manager of FiberHome’s Transport Business Unit. “We standardized on PMC-Sierra’s HyPHY products because they enabled us to significantly reduce our development costs by eliminating multiple designs, in addition to offering uniform functionality across our platforms. By achieving this design breakthrough at 50 percent lower power, we are confident that our best-in-class WDM product line will enable FiberHome to offer OTN solutions to Carriers around the world.”
Any-port, Any-rate, Any-service Platform for ROADMs, P-OTPs and µ-OTPs
The HyPHY family delivers high capacity framing, mapping, switching and multiplexing of carrier Ethernet, SAN, OTN, transparent bit services such as video, and SONET/SDH to allow Carriers to reduce the number of line cards and network elements, and adapt to a changing service mix without costly replacement of equipment. The platform provides client-agnostic, rate-agile Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) and 10 Gigabit pluggable (XFP or SFP+) interfaces and a set of OTN and Packet system interfaces for networking to a variety of switch fabric architectures and network processors.

Communications Weekly Gives Editor's Choice Award to PMC-Sierra's META20G
PMC-Sierra’s META 20G was selected as the Editor’s Choice Award winner by Communications Weekly, one of the most influential communications magazines in China. The editorial team recognized the “META solution for enabling IP over OTN transport on Carrier Ethernet Switcher/Router (CESR), which consequently will expedite OTN network deployment.” The magazine went on to state that OTN is the clear trend to make the next generation transport network a reality.
PMC’s META 20G device allows Carrier Ethernet Switch and Router (CESR) equipment to seamlessly connect to emerging Metro Optical Transport Networks (ITU-T G.709 OTN). With Carriers worldwide transitioning their networks to OTN for optimized transport of IP services, the META 20G permits a converged OTN infrastructure across IP and optical equipment, with unified end-to-end network management. The device integrates Carrier Ethernet mapping and framing of 10GE LAN and WAN, and OTN mapping of IP-services such as Storage Area Networks (SAN) and video protocols, while maintaining support for deployed technologies such as Packet over SONET/SDH (POS).
The META 20G belongs to PMC’s OTN product portfolio, which includes the HyPHY 20G and HyPHY 10G for Packet Optical Transport Platforms (P-OTP) and Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPP). The portfolio provides a chipset solution for end-to-end integration of OTN across metro networks.

OTN Survey Reveals Huge Shift in Carrier Plans for Optical Switching
Infonetics Research recently released excerpts from its OTN Deployment Strategies: Global Service Provider Survey, for which carriers in North America, Asia Pacific, EMEA, and CALA were interviewed about their plans for optical transport networks.
Andrew Schmitt, directing analyst for optical at Infonetics Research noted that “All of the carriers we interviewed for our OTN survey have deployed OTN interfaces in transport applications, and based on conversations aside from this survey, we know very few major carriers in general will ‘skip’ OTN. There is a huge shift between now and 2014 in the area of optical switching, with the number of carriers with plans to deploy OTN interfaces on electrical switching equipment rising from 37% to 84%.”

A Tutorial on ITU-T G.709 Optical Transport Networks
The SONET/SDH network that has grown to be the backbone of most of the modern telecommunications network was originally designed for optical interfaces that used a single wavelength per fiber. As optical component technology has advanced, it has become more economical to transmit multiple SONET/SDH signals over the same fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) rather than going to a higher rate SONET/SDH signal. Based on experience with the SONET/SDH networks, the ITU-T defined a transport network that was optimized for cost-effective transparent transport of a variety of client signals over WDM networks. The optical transport network (OTN) architecture is specified in ITU-T Rec. G.872 and the frame format and payload mappings are specified in G.709. This white paper provides a tutorial overview of OTN, with primary emphasis on ITU-T G.709. The white paper also discusses various constraints that influenced the development of G.709, its current status in the network, and some factors that will affect its future.
Enabling OTN Convergence - Solutions for the New Packet Optical Transport Network (P-OTP)
Transport networks worldwide are steadily evolving from a pure SONET/SDH-centric infrastructure to one that better supports packet traffic. The “Enabling OTN Convergence - Solutions for the New Packet Optical Transport Network (P-OTP)” white paper (Registration Required) outlines the motivation behind the transport network's evolution to adopt OTN and describes the architectures of new network elements required, including the Packet Optical Transport Platform (P-OTP). The paper explores relevant standards that apply to these architectures. It also discusses specific requirements and design elements for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to consider when evaluating technology to implement these architectures. The white paper concludes with an introduction to PMC's family of OTN products, a chip set of highly integrated components designed to address critical requirements in the next generation Packet Optical Transport Network (P-OTN).
PMC-Sierra hosted a webinar entitled “Enabling OTN Convergence – Solutions for the Packet Optical Transport Network”. Mark Orthodoxou, Senior Product Marketing Manager, discussed how transport networks worldwide are steadily evolving from a pure SONET/SDH-centric infrastructure to one better suited for packet transport based on OTN.
During the webinar, Mark outlined the motivation behind the transport network’s evolution to adopt OTN and described the architectures of new network elements required, including the Optical Transport Platform (OTP) and the Packet-OTP (P-OTP). He explored relevant standards and discussed specific requirements and design elements for the OEM to consider when evaluating technology to implement these architectures. Mark also highlighted PMC's leading solutions: the HyPHY product family for transport applications, and the META product family for Carrier Ethernet Switches & Routers (CESRs), underscoring PMC’s multi-service end-to-end OTN offering, which delivers the highest integration and lowest power.
