PMC-Sierra’s Pluggable GPON ONT Enables Complete GPON ONT Functionality in a Pluggable Form Factor
PMC-Sierra’s new pluggable GPON Optical Network Terminal (ONT) reference design is the industry’s first to enable the connection of any CPE equipped with a standard Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) port to a high-speed Passive Optical Network. This eliminates the need for carriers and service providers to issue new equipment when introducing advanced fiber-based services and eliminates the requirement for a separate, standalone ONT box.
The PAS65823-KIT
pluggable ONT reference design is available now.
It integrates an optical transceiver, an innovative
host interface, and a complete OMCI stack that is interoperable
with all major OLT systems on the market. It can be
connected to any SFP receptacle, does not require software
or hardware modifications to the host system and has
a typical power consumption.

Complete GPON ONT functionality in pluggable form factor
Raphael Sankar, vice president and co-general manager of PMC-Sierra’s FTTH Division, presented “TotalPON™ - A Complete Architecture for PON System Design” at OptiNet China on May 27, 2010. The presentation introduced PMC-Sierra’s TotalPON approach to silicon and system design, which focuses on the common features of developing PONsystems, specifically the 10Gb/s speed and common networking elements.
As a supplier of both IEEE EPON and ITU-T GPON solutions, PMC-Sierra has the expertise to identify and address the common development elements that can be combined when designing next-generation PON systems. TotalPON provides a complete architecture for the multiple PON standards that are being developed by competing standard groups and enables PON equipment manufacturers to address the global market.
OptiNet is one of China’s premier optical networking conferences.
TECOM
Selects PMC-Sierra Solutions for GPON ONT Equipment
Targeted at European FTTH Markets
TECOM, a broadband equipment manufacturer based in Taiwan, is using PMC-Sierra’s PAS7400 SoC and interoperable OMCI software package for its new Mini GPON Gigabit ONT. TECOM’s ONT targets European FTTH market, where triple-play quality of service at Gigabit Ethernet wire speed to the home is required. The ONT features a GbE user interface and supports 2.5G downstream traffic to the customer at any packet size.
“Our products must provide the highest quality of service at GbE speeds and fit into small form factor designs in order to meet European customers’ requirements. TECOM selected PMC-Sierra’s field-proven GPON ONT SoC and OMCI software because it is the best solution for these requirements, and it allowed us to get a complete product to market quickly. TECOM’s Mini GPON Gigabit ONT provides multiple high-quality data, voice and video applications to end users and can connect to any GPON Optical Line Terminal that carriers deploy.”
Kevin Shen, director of product line management, TECOM
PMC-Sierra is the only supplier to support EPON (IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile), 10G EPON (IEEE 802.3av) and GPON (ITU-T G.984) standards. The Company’s gigabit PON products are based on the robust GigaPASS™ FTTH Architecture that achieves sustained gigabit and greater data rates while providing a powerful 32-bit programmable processing engine executing the real-time operating system, middleware, and application-specific firmware required for high performance FTTH network access. PMC-Sierra’s SoC solutions provide end-to-end gigabit-per-second bandwidth connections linking central office equipment (optical line terminals) and customer premises equipment (optical network units or network terminals) to the PON network.
