On September 11, 2009, PMC-Sierra and more than 40 companies and organizations that supported the IEEE P802.3av 10 Gbit/s Ethernet Passive Optical Network (10G-EPON) Task Force celebrated the ratification of the standards. The new standard supports both symmetric and asymmetric line rate operations. Initial deployments of 10G-EPON equipment are expected in 2010.

For both telco service providers and CATV providers, the most flexible and future-proof medium for providing triple play services is fiber, with its virtually unlimited bandwidth availability. Since providing a direct optical connection between the CO and each subscriber is cost prohibitive, most optical access systems share a passive optical network (PON) among multiple subscribers. Existing 1 Gbit/s IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet PON (EPON) and ITU-T G.984 2.5 Gbit/s PON (GPON) are currently being deployed. While these protocols provide high-speed data, IPTV and VoIP access, more bandwidth is required for high definition switched digital video over Internet Protocol television (IPTV). This paper provides a tutorial overview of the IEEE 802.3av 10Gbit/s Ethernet PON (10G-EPON) standards, including the ways in which it differs from EPON. >>Download
The Importance of Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation in GPON Networks
A well-defined Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm in PON networks can significantly improve network performance, provide a means of flexibly tailoring network responsiveness and enable a service provider to generate more revenue from its FTTH networks without boosting raw bandwidth by increasing the percentage of acceptable oversubscription. A GPON Bandwidth Allocation algorithm allows the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to control upstream bandwidth allocation to the Optical Network Terminals (ONT). This paper compares currently available Bandwidth Allocation methods and their impact on the service provided to the subscriber. >>Download

PMC-Sierra Demonstrates Symmetric 10G-EPON
PMC-Sierra provides complete systems for symmetric 10G IEEE 802.3av EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLT) and Optical Network Units (ONU) that deliver 10Gbit/s downstream and 10Gbit/s upstream performance. Click below to view a demonstration where Gilad Aloni, Director of Product Marketing explains the simple upgrade from 1G EPON to 10G, and how this increased performance enables carriers to provide new services, while further reducing capital and operating expenditures.
